The sub-compact Versa hatchback will receive a fresh new look that takes design cues from the new Nissan Note, sold in Japan and other overseas markets.

According to Nissan, the Note, which goes on sale in Japan in September and in Europe in 2013, offers hints about the design direction for the next Versa hatchback. Both are based on the company’s global V-platform, but the Versa will embrace features tailored to its markets, including the US, Canada, Mexico and Brazil. More details about the future Versa hatchback will be available closer to its launch.

The Versa leads Japanese subcompact sales in Canada with 7,014 units as thus far in 2012, outselling the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris and Mazda 2. The second-generation Nissan Versa sedan was introduced last year.
