Canadian Tire says it worked with its vendors to right-size its Likewise brand of outdoor swift-tie garbage bags.
The company changed the product packaging from a flat-fold format to a roll format, reducing the size of the package by 30 percent and its weight by 11 percent.
The Likewise brand is one of 35 products Canadian Tire has right-sized this year, which it expects to result in an annual avoidance of over 470 tonnes of packaging.
Canadian Tire reports quarterly on its sustainability efforts, and says it finished 89 sustainability projects in the third quarter for a total of 203 this year.
“This quarter marks Canadian Tire’s first regular quarterly sustainability report of sustainability upgrades and process improvements, low-carbon energy generation, and industry product stewardship and recycling programs,” said Tyler Elm, Canadian Tire’s vice-president of business sustainability. “Focusing on these areas emphasizes our commitment to our sustainability goals and allows us to carefully track our progress as we become more efficient in our business operations.”
Canadian Tire reports sustainability efforts in three areas: products, transportation to retail stores, and the operation of owned and leased buildings.
